The Evil Diesel—Is Making A Comeback

Randy Overton’s beastly, billet-aluminum, Wagler-built Duramax hit the engine dyno recently, and oh the sweet sounds it made. This mechanically injected monstrosity will power Randy’s “Evil Diesel” Super Stock GMC down the track this summer, and while no official dyno numbers were offered up, expect horsepower to check in above 3,500 hp (similar to that of Cummins Killer III). Many will remember the truck this billet V-8 will power down the track as the black, late-model crew cab that ran away at the end of the track several years ago. Without question, that scary moment (and the damage it caused) are well behind Randy at this point.

Ford AI Engineering Test Fails: Engineers Re-Hired

For those worried AI will steal their jobs, you got a win this week: Ford isn’t giving up on AI, but it is rebalancing how it uses it. The company found that it's newly implemented "automated quality systems" still need experienced engineers behind them, especially when it comes to catching issues before they turn into real world problems, and/or customer complaints.Ford has since added or promoted more than 350 veteran engineers to help younger teams and improve quality checks.

Grabbing Groceries…In A 1,200 HP Excursion

Long time Ford loyalist, Danny Elmore, has been busy piecing together what is one of the most powerful Excursions ever assembled. On a recent visit to Truck Source Diesel, his 6.0L Power Stroke powered SUV laid down an incredible 1,023 hp on TSD’s chassis dyno. Then the bottle was turned on and Danny’s ‘Ex cleared 1,200 hp even. Not bad for a HEUI-fired family hauler. Danny’s combination consists of an S488 over a KC Turbos Stage 3 VGT, Warren Diesel 330cc/150-percent over nozzle injectors, and a Thumper 2 high-pressure oil pump from RCD Performance.

Extracurricular Activities At Trucks Unleashed

The fifth stop on the 2026 Outlaw Diesel Super Series circuit, a first-time event, will be held at Edgewater Sports Park in Cleves, Ohio the weekend of September 18-19. Coined “Trucks Unleashed,” it will host the regular race program ODSS is known for, but after Friday’s qualifying concludes there may be an interesting twist. Event organizer, Rowdy’s Automotive & Motorsports’ Brad Helton, has requested ideas for an additional racing class—and one that will pay out. So far, everything from heads-up Smart Car racing to a Seventy2 Fast style category to a small tire vs 4x4 race has been proposed. Time will tell which racing format makes it into the official show…

Pushing The Limits of The 10L1000 Allison

No Zone Diesel’s Dmitri Millard and UDT’s Blake Crenshaw have been killing it on the 10-speed Allison platform as of late, and the duo made another breakthrough over the weekend. On the dyno at the inaugural Southern Ohio Smoke Show, Dmitri’s L5P Duramax laid down an impressive 1,003 hp on fuel when his nitrous solenoids failed to open. However, on the four-digit pull his data logs proved that zero torque converter slip had occurred (something they’d been fighting), even when running the truck from 3,200 to 5,400 rpm in seventh gear (1:1) and up to 150 mph. Despite the nitrous mishap, Dmitri and his late model L5P took home a trophy and cash for highest horsepower Chevy/GMC at the show.

US EPA Sends 4 California Waivers To Congress For Repeal

The United States EPA has sent four California waivers to Congress for potential repeal. Among them are: 1) the Motor Vehicle Evaporative Emissions and Greenhouse Gas (also known as Advanced Clean Cars I, ACC I), which imposes more stringent emission requirements than federal standards and ultimately pushes buyers toward EV ownership nationwide, 2) Reinstatement of ACC I, 3) Small Offroad Engine (SORE) Amendments—a rule that imposes emission requirements for lawn and garden equipment which has brought about a push toward electrification of these tools, and 4) Greenhouse Gas Emission Standards—a rule that allows California to enforce crushing GHG standards, ultimately forcing automakers to develop a vehicle to fit California’s standards rather than one to meet federal standards (which leads to higher overall vehicle costs).
