Everyone knows the L5P Duramax is a beast in stock form, with an ability to handle well north of 1,000 hp on stock internals before problems arise. But how drivable is an L5P with an S476 from Forced Inductions in place of the factory VGT and a set of 300-percent over DDP injectors in conjunction with a bone-stock six-speed Allison 1000? According to Josh McCormack, great. Thanks to some very fine tuning from friend, Dominic Ferrante, Josh’s ’18 GMC Sierra lights quick and burns ultra clean. Granted, the Allison won’t last long, not even on tune 1 (roughly 750 hp), but with proper tuning (and driving) it can live longer than you’d expect. Full disclosure, a CP3 swap and AirDog II 5G 220-gph system are also along for the ride.

In a move that will serve to help independent shops as well as private ownership repairs across the diesel industry, President Trump signed a Right to Repair memorandum last week. The memorandum came about after the administration caught wind that mechanics were being criminally prosecuted and even sent to prison for fixing vehicles—fixes that sometimes altered vehicle emissions. The memorandum also comes on the heels of news breaking that both Ford and General Motors were actively pushing for legislation to keep the average car, truck, or SUV owner from repairing their own vehicles.

Remember when Blackout In The Country was the premier event you went to (or at least heard about) every fall? Well, Bean Machine owner Ryan Bean may be letting that genie out of the bottle again… All-day action on the Dynocom chassis dyno, dirt drags, and nonstop burnouts typified the company’s yearly October affair back in the day, and we can only hope it makes a full comeback. After putting the question to social media last week, the public resounded with an overwhelming “Hell Yes.” So how about it? Would you attend a public dyno event here at Bean Machine this autumn?

This is Big. Aaron Rudolf, owner and founder of Rudy’s Performance Parts, spent the Fourth of July in deep relief. This is because on July 3rd, he was given a presidential pardon from Donald Trump. Aaron (Rudy) and his team of lawyers had been fighting Clean Air Act violations, and ensuing fines, levied by the Environmental Protection Agency for more than 10 years. Now, his decade-long nightmare is finally over thanks to the President’s full and unconditional pardon. But it gets better. Five others were also pardoned the same day, with Ryan and Wade Lalone of Diesel Freak being among them.

Don’t look now, but veteran truck puller, Joe Wiltse, is leading the points chase in his local organization, the Badger State Tractor Pullers. Joe competes in the BSTP’s Pro Stock Diesel Truck class, a category that allows cut tires, a 7,800-pound maximum, and enforces a single, smooth bore, 3.6-inch inducer turbo rule. He’s been campaigning this ’97 F-350, in one form or another, since the 2000s. Over the years it’s primarily been 12-valve Cummins powered but was graced with a P-pumped 7.3L Power Stroke from Hypermax Engineering for a period. Although seven hooks remain on 2026 schedule (and the competition behind him amounts to some of the best trucks in the nation), it’s great to see an old veteran like Joe leading the charge—and in the same truck he’s been competing with for the last 20 years.

Yeah, you read that right. Researchers in Japan say driving a stick shift can act like a small brain workout because it forces the driver to stay engaged with timing, coordination, gear selection, and road conditions. Apparently driving a manual works the part of the brain tied to memory, attention, and decision-making. So if you needed a new excuse to keep the manual car, or to get a new one, here it is.
